BIO
I graduated from OCADu (then called the Ontario College of Art) in 1985 having studied painting and sound-sculpture. As a first year student, I began a summer job as the in- house designer at a prominent Toronto architectural stained glass production studio, which stretched into year round part time work and upon graduation in 1985, a full time job. I began showing my work in 1994 and in 2004 had a solo museum show at the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo Ontario. Since then I have shown my work extensively in a variety of venues and undertaken many architectural installations. In 2012 I was awarded the Rideau Street Renewal public art project and have since been short-listed for several notable public art projects. In 1992 I established my own architectural art-glass conservation/restoration company (now incorporated as Mark Thompson Visual Arts & Traditional Glassworks) in order to supplement my glass-based art practice. My work as an art glass conservator has given me a thorough understanding of the factors that contribute to the longevity of architectural glasswork.
