Canadian Forces Artist Program
These images are from an installation of inter-linked works from the 2018 Canadian Forces Artists Program (CFAP) show at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and, are related to my CFAP Operation IMPACT participation and deployment to the Ali Al Salim and Al Jaber Coalition Airbases in the Kuwaiti desert.
Hard Rain (Working Title)
Based on the archetypal bomb silhouettes that Canadian CF-18 pilots stencil onto the fuselage of their jets after successful sorties, this component of the installation re-imagines aerial warfare as an ever-present threat from above, roving the planet like some deadly storm.
Book of War
Through random colour shifts that reference advanced military imaging techniques (infra-red, night-vision, heat-sensing etc.) the composited film imagery, the fun-house distortion of the lens-like glass books and the context (within opened tomes on lecterns in a museum), this component of the installation references the subjectivity of wartime documentation.
Shelter Series
This component of the installation comprises eight kiln-fired glass paintings of the brutalist, utilitarian shelter and bunker structures scattered throughout the sprawling Al Jaber & Ali Al Salim Coalition Airbases.
